River Terrace Education Campus and Pool

Washington, DC

GCS-SIGAL was the Design-Builder for the modernization of the River Terrace Elementary School into a Special Education Center, which serves up to 160 students between the ages of 3 through 21 with exceptional needs and profound disabilities. The project includes a total gut and renovation of the existing 75,000-square-foot interior building providing new classrooms, a media center, a cafeteria and kitchen area, and a refurbished gymnasium.

The new Career Development Center (CDC) consists of a 35,500-square-foot; administration suite with a visitors’ welcoming center; a health suite with a doctor and dentist office; an occupational therapy suite with a therapy pool; and music, art, and sensory rooms. The program included site restoration for accessible playground equipment and exercise devices, ramps and pavement markings for outside learning games, landscaping and horticultural gardens, and a courtyard garden with an amphitheater and outdoor classroom. In addition, the facility is equipped with energy-efficient mechanical and plumbing systems, sustainable design windows, technology enhancements, and ADA improvements.
