Gallaudet University · Living and Learning Residence Hall

Gallaudet University, the only higher education institution designed specifically for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, ensures all programs and services are tailored to their needs. Recognizing that sign language occurs in physical space, GCS-SIGAL and their design partners tested the architecture against DeafSpace guidelines to fully accommodate the deaf experience.
The new state-of-the-art Living and Learning Residence Hall includes 75 student dorm rooms, community kitchens, a small fitness room, a learning center, a lobby, and a café. A dramatic staircase, starting at the living spaces and integrating with shared lounges on each floor, serves as the symbolic and literal heart of the building. This design supports visual and communication exchanges across and between the five-story building’s floors.
