Arboretum Community Center

Washington, DC

GCS-SIGAL completed the renovation and addition of DC’s first mass timber project, the Arboretum Community Center. The project involved renovating 1,400 SF of existing space and constructing a 6,880 SF addition featuring a half gym, community room, kitchen, study area, and other amenities. Coordination with the Historic Preservation Office and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts ensured that the upgrades to the existing “Mission 66” historic building harmonized with the new addition.

Site improvements included a new outdoor fitness area, resurfaced tennis courts, and playgrounds for both younger and older children. The gym highlights glulam beams and cross-laminated timber panels, reflecting the wood design of the adjacent U.S. National Arboretum.
