American University · McKinley Building
Washington, DC

American University’s McKinley Building, home to the School of Communication, is the second oldest building on campus. Construction involved demolishing an existing addition, fully gutting the original structure, restoring the historic exterior, and building a new three-story addition.
The building features digital imaging labs, classrooms, offices, administrative spaces, and a Media Innovation Lab with a 150-seat theater. A central atrium was added to create space for lectures and events. The scope also included green roofs, terrazzo flooring, floor-to-ceiling windows, and incorporating marble from the original building into the addition and landscaping.
